Julie Lawrence Personal Statement

Using the hind sights of traditional painting and the processes of digital photography, my work hovers between reality and unreality in a quest to capture coincidental moments of light around an inherited collection of domestic remnants. 

These ephemeral visions are transformed into ambiguous photographic images which relate to memories, dreams and imagination. The work is therefore removed from the physical constraints of their original nostalgic form and re-contextualised into the transcendent and infinite boundaries of a photographic collection.

This photographic work is then relocated into a shared space with containers such as an old handbag, a bible, prayer book or a sewing box. 

By merging inner feelings with outer surfaces, then, I seek to reveal a sense of personal story which translates into narratives of body and soul. The miniature scale of the work seeks to draw the viewer into these intimate spaces, inviting, imagination and personal involvement.

A compulsion to find a sense of something tangible within the intangible is at the heart of my practise; a pre-occupation to archive the essence of ancestral endeavours speaks of an underlying quest for meaning within a discourse of endlessness; a desire to still the blur and find meaning within re-enchanted space.
